Mt Kenya National Park & Reserve

Mount Kenya is the second highest peak in Africa. The park was founded in 1949 to protect the surrounding environment and wildlife, for tourism purposes and conserve the water catchment for the surrounding areas. The park is currently encircled by a forest reserve and in 1978, it was designated as a UNESCO Biosphere reserve. Combined the park and reserve became a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997. The park harbors some rare species including tree hyraxes, white tailsed mongoose, suni, black fronted duiker, mole rats, bushbucks, elands, bongo and giant forest hog.
