The Samburu Reserve is located on the northern bank of Ewaso Ng’iro River and the adjoining Buffalo Springs Reserve lies on the southern bank of the same river. A bridge across the Ewaso Ng’iro connects the two reserves as well as Shaba National reserve. Shaba National Reserve may be best known as the place where George and Joy Adamson raised Elsa the lioness made famous by the best-selling and award-winning book Born free. The three reserves are not separated by any fences and animals can freely traverse them forming the unique Samburu Eco-System. Samburu is home to the Samburu Special Five animals; The Gerenuks, Beisa Oryx, Grevy’s Zebra, somali ostrich and the Reticulated giraffe. It also harbors once of the critically endangered species, Pancake tortoise.
